About CryoTherapy

What is CryoTherapy?

CryoTherapy uses pressurised CO2 gas to target very specific areas including joints like the hock, stifle, pastern, and fetlock. It helps with optimised range of motion and reduced pain. CryoTherapy is an effective maintenance and injury prevention tool.

How does CryoTherapy work?

CryoTherapy diffuses streams of high-pressure CO2 at 70 bars pressure and -110 degrees Fahrenheit to affected site on the horses body, this creates thermal shock that immediately activates the sensory neuroreceptors under the skin. The horses central nervous system then responds with corrective reflex, which brings a reduction in inflammation, swelling, and pain with further muscular relaxation within just 60 seconds.

Why is CryoTherapy better than ice packs?

Cryotherapy utilizes extremely cold air—often below 0°F—to rapidly reduce skin temperature within a short period of time, producing an intense and effective sensory response. In contrast, traditional ice packs typically maintain a temperature of approximately 32°F and may warm quickly during application.

Cryotherapy offers a more consistent and controlled cooling method, making it a superior alternative to ice packs for managing tendon and ligament injuries. It is particularly beneficial for full-limb treatment, delivering uniform cooling across the affected area and supporting inflammation prevention following intense training sessions.

Principle Effects

Analgesia

Anti-Inflammatory

Anti-Inflammatory

Treatment brings a immediate reduction in pain caused by the joint, ligament, and tendon issues, allowing horses to recover from acute and chronic lameness faster

Anti-Inflammatory

Anti-Inflammatory

Anti-Inflammatory

Swelling decreases rapidly, while associated increases in blood flow enables faster healing of damaged soft tissue, especially in laminitic horses.

Muscular

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular

Rapid resolution of post-exercise tension and pain from microtears reduces the risk of further tissue damage.

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular

Cardiovascular

Blood vessels dilate leading to improved circulation, minimising the possibility of further damage caused by poor blood flow to injury sites.
